Course Description:
Biological risk assessments come in many kinds. Biosafety officers are the subject matter experts in their organization. How can they bring the risk assessment process to life and ensure risk assessments become living documents that support biorisk management and risk communication? The course explores problems and solutions in complex biological risk assessments. It provides practical instruction in the bowtie risk assessments as a reference method.
Learning Objectives:
- Identifying and addressing shared challenges encountered in (biological) risk assessments
- Risk Assessment Methodologies: Pros and Cons for biological risk assessments
- Reading bowtie risk models
- Developing bio bowtie risk models for biorisk visualization and management
- Defining risk assessment scope and detail, bio-hazards, risk paths, risk initiating events, loss of control events (LOCE), risk matrix, and barrier definition.
- Biological risk path categories
- Consequence categories and risk tolerance.
- Defining and managing barriers: preventive(leading), mitigating (lagging), compound barriers, reliability of barriers, monitoring barrier performance
- Using bowtie risk models in risk management and risk communication
Target audience: biorisk/biosafety officers with operational experience in biological risk assessments, and biorisk management. The course builds on a solid foundation in biological risk assessment and assumes basic competence in biorisk management
ISO/TS 5441 Competence Requirements for biorisk management advisors:
The course is focussing on the development of skills needed for Complex biorisk management settings (ISO/TS5441, table B2 left column), specifically
- 7.2.2 Planning of Biorisk Management
- 7.2.2.1 Competence to address risks and their management
- 7.2.2.2 Hazard and Threat Identification
- 7.2.2.3 Risk Assessment
