Biosafety
When is biosafety of relevance for you?
Many activities with biological material fall under the scope of the biosafety legislation. Obvious examples include all genetically modified organisms, as well as pathogens of any kind (from infectious proteins over various microbes directed against humans, animals and plants, up to multicellular parasites). Less obvious examples are genetically modified non-pathogenic microorganisms, used as tools for sequencing and expression of genes, for the study of biochemical pathways (gene silencing and overexpression, ...) and other fundamental approaches. Similarly, scientists are sometimes unaware that cell cultures, even the non-pathogenic ones, are seen as "biological agents" that are subjected to the legislation about biosafety. There is also sometimes confusion between the need to consider bioethics or biosafety rules when working with animals or animal biopsies obtained from colleagues working abroad or from a local slaughterhouse.
Biosafety being a rather young discipline, users of biological materials feel sometimes not quite comfortable about the way to evaluate the risk linked to their activity or the best way to manage this risk.
Through regular workshops, BBP offers the opportunity to users to get a better understanding of all aspects of biosafety (how to assess the risk, how to manage infectious wastes, to choose the right disinfectant, to validate biosafety methods, ...) including a reflection about recent aspects of the legislation.
