My daily work is to oversee regulatory biosafety compliance for approximately 100 laboratories (BSL1, BSL2 and BSL3), ensuring adherence to applicable standards and guidelines. As part of my activities, I support scientists in risk assessment of their biological activities and train them to work in BSL2 and BSL3 laboratories.

The Institute for Infectious Diseases of the University of Bern combines diagnostics, teaching and research under one roof and covers the entire spectrum of microbiological diagnostics.Monika Gsell is deputy head of the Biosafety Center and managing the BSL3 laboratory at the Institute for Infectious Diseases. She has been involved in Biosafety for more than 12 years. From 2011 -2019 she was in the biosafety department of the Institute of Virology and Immunology (IVI), the Swiss reference lab for highly contagious animal diseases (Biosafety Level 3 and 3Ag Laboratories).
