This full-day course provides a comprehensive introduction to laboratory biosecurity principles, focusing on the practical application of risk assessment strategies. Participants will explore the WHO Laboratory Biosecurity Guidance, examining the connections and distinctions between biosecurity and biosafety. The course covers the process of conducting biosecurity risk assessments (threat assessment), including team dynamics and real-world examples. Through group discussions and case studies, participants will actively engage in analyzing and mitigating biosecurity risks, with an emphasis on using their own professional experiences. While topics like Gain of Function (GoF) research will be integrated into risk assessment discussions, Dual Use Research of Concern (DURC) will only be briefly addressed.
